The Capital of Georgia is Atlanta and is rich in history. Yes it is a young city by all standards, but it thrives now do to total aggressiveness. It was started as a railroad stop only, which seemed more western that southern. So the ways of the town were more like the old west. Transportation was and still is what makes Georgia thrive. The land that is now Atlanta once belonged to the Cherokee and Creek Indians. The country was dealing with the War of 1812 when the first fort, named Peachtree, was built on the bank of the Chattahoochee River near where the Cherokee village was. The Cherokees lived on this land next to the white man till 1835 when the leaders of the tribe chose to leave and move to the west after signing the treaty of New Echota. The Creek tribe left their lands in 1825 and headed west as well. Today, there is a place that became famous called the Trail of Tear that represents the way of the Indian tribes.

Mostly, Atlanta was filled with farmers and craftsmen from states around Georgia that received their plot of land through a lottery. Think of it, a lottery that the prize was land and not money. They were religious and a very hard working people. They had few slaves and lived happily with the Indians. They built churches and schools, bought goods and gave Atlanta the start up of a thriving economy that still exists today.

It was a man by the name of Hernando De Soto that first explored the fine state of Georgia. He was from Spain and the year was 1540. By the year 1566, building had begun along the Atlantic coast. By 1732 Georgia became the 13th colony by the King of England, his name King George II. In the following years, the city of Savannah was founded and after the Revolutionary War began, the fine folks of Georgia joined in on the fight for true freedom. Georgia became a state on Jan. 2, 1788 and is the 4th state of the union.
